Silliot Hill civic amenity guide · 2026

Plan Your Kilcullen Recycling Run Before You Reach the Weighbridge

The main Kilcullen recycling centre is Silliot Hill Recycling Centre & Civic Amenity, just outside Kilcullen on the Naas–Kilcullen road. It accepts household recycling, general and bulky waste, garden waste, electricals, mattresses, paint and several specialist streams.

Use this guide to check the 8am–3:45pm opening hours, R56 AC61 address, current AES charges, free household WEEE, materials that are refused, trailer rules and the questions worth asking before a large or unusual load.

Quick answer for Kilcullen

Silliot Hill is open Monday to Saturday from 8:00am to 3:45pm and is closed on Sundays and bank holidays.

The address is Silliot Hill, Kilcullen, Co. Kildare, R56 AC61. AES operates the civic amenity facility on behalf of Kildare County Council.

What will it cost?

There is no single gate price for every load. AES currently prices general and bulky waste by weight, while clean recycling can be charged by vehicle type.

For example, municipal solid waste is listed at 30c/kg with an €8 minimum, green waste at 10c/kg with a €5 minimum, and a saloon-car recycling load at €2.25.

Current schedule

Kilcullen Recycling Centre Opening Hours

Kildare County Council and AES currently publish the same normal schedule for Silliot Hill: 8:00am to 3:45pm, Monday through Saturday. The AES operational page says the site is closed on bank holidays.

Day Opening hours Practical note
Monday 8:00am–3:45pm Normal opening unless it is a bank holiday.
Tuesday 8:00am–3:45pm Suitable for bulky or green waste if sorted in advance.
Wednesday 8:00am–3:45pm Call before bringing an unusual or construction-type item.
Thursday 8:00am–3:45pm Normal published hours.
Friday 8:00am–3:45pm Allow enough time to weigh and unload a mixed load.
Saturday 8:00am–3:45pm Weekend traffic can be heavier; sort the vehicle before arrival.
Sunday Closed Use Monday–Saturday.
Bank holidays Closed Seasonal Christmas/New Year hours can also differ.

Do not arrive at 3:44pm with a full trailer. The listed closing time is not a promise that staff can weigh, inspect and unload a complicated load in the final minute. Go earlier for bulky waste, mattresses, paint, tyres or mixed loads.

Current AES price list

Kilcullen Recycling Centre Charges

AES currently publishes different charges according to the waste stream and, in some cases, the vehicle or weight. Do not add every line together: staff classify the material you actually bring.

Waste / load Published charge What it means
Municipal solid waste €0.30/kg; minimum €8 General household waste priced by weight.
Bulky waste €0.30/kg; minimum €8 Furniture and similar bulky household material.
Wood / timber €0.10/kg; minimum €5 Keep timber separate from mixed general waste.
Green / garden waste €0.10/kg; minimum €5 Grass, branches and other accepted garden material.
Recycling – saloon car €2.25 Clean recyclable load brought in a standard saloon car.
Recycling – van, trailer, estate car or jeep €4.50 Vehicle-based recycling charge for these larger load types.
Household appliances Free Domestic WEEE such as household electrical appliances.
Commercial electricals €0.50/kg Commercial WEEE is not covered by the free household rate.
Commercial recycling €0.10/kg Commercial recycling loads are separately priced.
Organic / food waste €0.10/kg Separate organic material from dry recycling.
Paint / hazardous waste €0.63/kg; minimum €13 Keep containers secure and tell staff what you have.
Single mattress €20 Normal published mattress disposal charge outside free amnesty events.
Double mattress €30 Normal published charge outside free amnesty events.

2026 mattress event vs normal charge: Kildare County Council held a one-day free mattress amnesty at Silliot Hill on 6 September 2026. That special event does not remove the centre’s normal published €20 single / €30 double mattress charges on ordinary days.

Prices can change. The amounts above come from the current AES public price list. For a large van, trailer, mixed load or unusual material, phone before travelling so you know how it will be classified.

Accepted materials

What You Can Bring to Silliot Hill Recycling Centre

Kildare County Council’s current 2026–2028 litter-management plan and the AES site information show that Silliot Hill handles a wide range of domestic recycling and waste streams.

Material Accepted examples Preparation tip
Paper & cardboard Mixed paper, cardboard Keep clean and dry; flatten large boxes.
Glass Glass bottles and accepted household glass Separate bottles/jars from other waste.
Cans & metal Aluminium cans, metal cans, scrap metal Keep sharp or heavy pieces secure.
Plastics Plastic packaging and plastic bottles Empty containers before unloading.
Textiles Clothes-bank items Keep clean and dry.
Garden waste Green garden waste AES directs green waste to the designated skip on the hill.
Bulky waste Furniture and other accepted bulky household material Bulky waste is charged by weight with a minimum fee.
Mattresses Single and double mattresses Normal charges apply except during specifically announced amnesty events.
Household electricals White goods, TVs, monitors, small electricals Keep WEEE separate because household appliances are currently listed as free.
Batteries Household batteries and lead-acid car batteries Hand batteries over through the designated stream.
Lighting Light bulbs and fluorescent tubes Protect tubes and bulbs against breakage.
Paint Paint cans / household hazardous stream Keep containers closed and upright.
Waste oil Waste oil up to the site’s stated household limit Kildare’s accepted-material table notes a maximum of 10 litres.
Tyres Car tyres Call before arriving with multiple tyres or a commercial-type quantity.
Gas cylinders Accepted cylinder types Tell staff what cylinder you have before unloading.

Sort before leaving home. Put WEEE, batteries, cardboard, glass, metals, green waste, paint, mattresses and general waste in separate parts of the vehicle. This makes pricing and unloading faster.

Important exclusions

What Silliot Hill Does Not Accept

The current AES operational page specifically says the site does not accept construction-and-demolition materials including tiles, soil, stone, ceramics and insulation. Nitrous oxide canisters are also listed as not accepted.

Construction-type material

  • Tiles
  • Soil
  • Stone
  • Ceramics
  • Insulation

Other explicit restriction

  • Nitrous oxide canisters
  • Public access to the waste-transfer shed

Plasterboard needs a phone check. Kildare County Council’s adopted 2026–2028 plan includes gypsum plasterboard in its civic-amenity materials table, but AES’s live Silliot Hill page says C&D materials are not accepted. Because those sources do not fully align, do not load plasterboard until the site confirms the current operational rule.

Electrical recycling

Free Household Electrical Recycling at Kilcullen

AES currently lists household appliances as free of charge. MyWaste also identifies Silliot Hill as a free electrical/battery and lightbulb drop-off location.

Large appliances

Domestic fridges, dishwashers and other accepted white goods can use the household WEEE stream.

Small electricals

Toasters, kettles and similar household electrical items are included in Kildare’s accepted-material list.

TVs and monitors

TVs and computer monitors are listed among accepted electrical items.

Commercial WEEE is different. AES currently lists commercial electrical waste at €0.50/kg. Do not assume a business clear-out gets the free household appliance rate.

Garden loads

Green Waste and Timber Charges

Green waste and timber are currently priced separately from general household rubbish. Both are listed at €0.10/kg, with a €5 minimum charge.

AES specifically instructs visitors to dispose of green waste in the designated green-waste skip on the hill. Keep bags, wire, plastic pots, soil, stones and general rubbish out of the green material unless staff instruct otherwise.

Useful distinction: garden branches and grass are green waste. Soil and stone are construction/landscaping-type materials and the live AES page says these are not accepted.

Cars, vans & trailers

Using a Van or Trailer at Silliot Hill

Kildare County Council’s waste guidance says trailer loads must be covered with netting to prevent litter escaping on the road. This is stated as a condition of using the facility.

The current AES recycling charge also differentiates between a saloon car and larger vehicle types: a saloon-car recycling load is listed at €2.25, while a van, trailer, estate car or jeep recycling load is listed at €4.50.

A vehicle charge does not override waste-specific charges. General waste, bulky waste, green waste, hazardous waste and other streams can still be charged according to their own published rate.

Before you travel

Kilcullen Recycling Centre Checklist

1

Check the day

Normal opening is Monday–Saturday. Do not travel on Sunday or a bank holiday without checking a special notice.

2

Separate chargeable and free streams

Keep household WEEE away from general rubbish so free electrical recycling is not mixed into a chargeable waste load.

3

Remove C&D material

Do not bring tiles, soil, stone, ceramics or insulation based on the current AES restriction.

4

Cover a trailer

Use netting or another secure cover so material cannot escape during transport.

5

Call about ambiguous material

Plasterboard, unusual hazardous material, business quantities and mixed construction-style loads should be confirmed before travelling.

6

Keep your receipt

Kildare County Council advises people using recycling facilities instead of a regular waste collector to keep receipts as evidence that household waste was disposed of correctly.

Other local options

If Silliot Hill Cannot Take Your Item

Kildare County Council’s other council civic amenity site is at Gallows Hill, Athy. Athy’s operating days are more limited, so check before diverting there.

Kildare also maintains an extensive bring-bank network for smaller streams such as glass, cans and textiles. In Kilcullen itself, the council lists bring-bank facilities at the Mart car park and Silliot Hill.
