Quick answer

Holmestown Recycling Centre at a Glance

Holmestown Waste Management Facility is at Barntown, Wexford, Y35 Y28W. Wexford County Council lists it as open Tuesday to Friday from 8:15am–12 noon and 1pm–4pm, and Saturday from 8:15am–12 noon and 1pm–3pm.

It is closed Monday, Sunday and bank holidays. The site also closes for lunch from 12 noon to 1pm on normal opening days.

Unlike a basic bring bank or recycling-only drop-off point, Holmestown can handle several charged household waste streams including domestic refuse, green waste, waste paint, mattresses, sofas and carpet.

Only bringing electricals?

Wexford County Council says the normal entry charge does not apply when the visit is exclusively for waste electrical or electronic equipment.

Bringing paint?

Paint is charged by litre. Keep each paint type in its original container and do not mix gloss, emulsion, varnish or other paints.

Doing a house or garden clear-out?

Check the load category first because larger cars, vans, trailers, bulky goods and green-waste loads have separate prices.

Do not confuse the public recycling and waste centre with the former landfill. Wexford County Council’s development-plan material says the Holmestown landfill is not operating, while the recycling and waste facility continues to serve the public.

Items needing extra care

WEEE, Paint, Oil, Green Waste and Bulky Items

Electrical and electronic goods

TVs, fridges, freezers, cookers, kettles and other household electrical goods are accepted. If your load consists only of WEEE, the council says the normal entry charge does not apply.

Paint

The current council price is €1 per litre, with a maximum of 60 litres accepted. Paint types must not be mixed and containers should remain original.

Cooking and engine oil

The council lists a maximum of 23 litres for waste cooking oil and 23 litres for waste engine oil. Keep oils secure and separate during transport.

Garden waste

Holmestown has a separate green-waste price schedule for bags, cars, trailers, vans, horse boxes and larger weighed loads.

Mattresses and furniture

Mattresses, bases, armchairs, sofas and carpet are listed as chargeable bulky items. Check special council amnesty notices separately because temporary free or reduced-cost events can use different rules.

Polystyrene

The current page lists a pilot scheme at €2 per bag and states that the polystyrene must be bagged. Recheck before relying on this scheme because pilot arrangements can change.

Paint rule worth remembering: the council says charges apply per container regardless of how much paint remains, and different paint products should not be mixed.

Five-step visit plan

How to Prepare for a Holmestown Recycling Visit

A few minutes of sorting at home can make the difference between a simple drop-off and a confusing mixed load at the site.

1

Check the opening day

Remember the site is closed Monday, Sunday and bank holidays, and closes for lunch from noon until 1pm.

2

Identify every waste stream

Separate normal recycling, WEEE, batteries, oils, food waste, green waste, paint, general refuse and bulky goods before loading.

3

Estimate the chargeable load

Check whether you have bags, a car load, trailer, van, mattress, sofa, carpet, paint or garden waste because the prices differ.

4

Call about anything unusual

Use 053 9196455 if the material is not clearly listed or if the quantity is unusually large.

5

Follow site signs and staff instructions

Keep recycling streams separated and place each material only in its correct container or disposal area.
