Castlerea Recycling Centre: Opening Hours, Address & Charges

Roscommon civic amenity guide · 2026

Check Castlerea Recycling Centre Before You Pack the Car

Castlerea Civic Amenity Site is a Roscommon County Council household recycling facility at Castlerea Demesne. It opens only three days each week and closes for lunch, so checking the timetable before travelling matters.

This guide explains the F45 E162 address, free and chargeable recycling streams, WEEE rules, the important restriction on ordinary household rubbish, bulky-goods events and the current charge information that can—and cannot—be verified publicly.

Quick answer for Castlerea

Castlerea Civic Amenity Site is open Monday, Friday and Saturday from 8am to 4pm. It closes for lunch from 1pm to 1:30pm and is closed on bank holidays.

The site is at Demesne, Castlerea, Co. Roscommon, F45 E162. Current MyWaste information lists the site telephone number as 094 962 1617.

Important before loading rubbish

Castlerea is useful for sorted recycling, but it is not currently the Roscommon County Council route for ordinary residual household rubbish.

The council’s current civic-amenity guidance says general residual household waste in blue refuse bags is accepted only at the Roscommon and Ballaghaderreen civic amenity sites.

Current timetable

Castlerea Recycling Centre Opening Hours

Current MyWaste information and Roscommon County Council’s current civic-amenity material show that Castlerea operates three days per week. Unlike Roscommon town’s civic amenity site, Castlerea also closes for lunch.

Day Opening hours Practical note
Monday 8:00am–1:00pm and 1:30pm–4:00pm Closed for lunch 1:00pm–1:30pm.
Tuesday Closed No normal public opening.
Wednesday Closed No normal public opening.
Thursday Closed Wait until Friday or use another authorised facility.
Friday 8:00am–1:00pm and 1:30pm–4:00pm Avoid arriving during the lunch closure.
Saturday 8:00am–1:00pm and 1:30pm–4:00pm Useful weekend option, but sort your load before travelling.
Sunday Closed No regular Sunday opening.
Bank holidays Closed Check council notices around Christmas and other holiday periods.

The lunch closure is easy to miss. Arriving at 1:10pm means waiting until 1:30pm even though the site is otherwise an 8am–4pm facility.

Location

Castlerea Recycling Centre Address and Eircode

The current national MyWaste locator lists the facility as Castlerea Civic Amenity Site, Demesne, Castlerea, Co. Roscommon, F45 E162.

For sat-nav

F45 E162 is the clearest current location reference. Check that your map result says Castlerea Civic Amenity Site rather than a private recycler.

Operator

The site forms part of Roscommon County Council’s network of four civic amenity centres at Castlerea, Boyle, Ballaghaderreen and Roscommon.

Do not confuse this site with Castlerea ELV recyclers. End-of-life cars use authorised treatment facilities rather than the civic amenity site’s normal household recycling containers.

Current price position

Castlerea Recycling Centre Charges

Roscommon County Council’s current 2025–2027 civic-amenity information separates materials into free recycling and fee-based recycling. However, that current publication does not give a full 2026 euro price for each recycling ticket or vehicle category.

Older council documents contain specific ticket prices, but those historic figures should not be presented as current 2026 charges without a newer public price list.

Material / service Current fee status What to know
Mixed glass bottles & jars Free Household packaging glass.
Aluminium cans Free Separate from chargeable steel cans.
Textiles / wearable clothes / shoes Free Shoes should be wearable and in pairs.
Household WEEE Free Household electrical and electronic equipment.
Batteries Free Includes household batteries and other battery streams listed by the council.
Bulbs Free Keep fragile lamps protected during transport.
Soft plastics Fee based Current council guidance lists this as chargeable.
Paper, cardboard & books Fee based Keep clean and dry.
Steel cans / biscuit tins Fee based Different from free aluminium cans.
Tetra Paks Fee based Use the relevant recycling stream on site.
Scrap metal Fee based Call first for unusually large metal items.
Waste wood / timber Fee based Separate timber from normal dry recycling.
Polystyrene Fee based Listed as a chargeable stream.
Motor oil / cooking oil Fee based Keep oils in secure containers.
Paint / thinner / varnish / white spirits Fee based Hazardous handling rules can apply.
Aerosols Fee based Do not puncture containers before bringing them.

Price accuracy: the current official material confirms which categories are free or chargeable, but I could not verify a current public 2026 standard recycling-ticket price table. Ask the site or Roscommon County Council for the current ticket cost before making a special journey with chargeable material.

No-charge streams

What Can Be Recycled Free at Castlerea?

Roscommon County Council currently lists several household recycling streams as free across its civic amenity network.

Glass & cans

Mixed glass bottles and jars plus aluminium drinks cans are currently listed as free.

Electricals

Household WEEE, mobile phones and electrical/electronic equipment can use the free WEEE route.

Batteries & bulbs

Household batteries and bulbs are listed as free recycling streams.

Textiles

Wearable clothes and wearable shoes in pairs are included in the council’s free-recycling list.

Mobile phones

Phones are specifically included among the free materials in the council’s current plan.

Rechargeable vape devices

The current council plan includes rechargeable vape and e-cigarette devices within the battery-related free recycling stream.

Money-saving sorting tip: keep free WEEE, glass, aluminium cans, textiles and batteries separate from chargeable cardboard, steel cans, oils or timber. A well-sorted car is easier to unload and avoids confusing free and paid streams.

Critical restriction

Can You Bring General Household Rubbish to Castlerea?

Not under Roscommon County Council’s current normal civic-amenity arrangement. The council’s 2025–2027 plan states that residual household waste using its blue refuse bags can be disposed of only at the Ballaghaderreen and Roscommon civic amenity sites.

This means Castlerea should not be treated as a normal drop-off point for black bags of mixed household rubbish simply because it accepts many recycling streams.

Avoid a wasted journey: if the load is mainly residual household waste rather than recyclable material, use the council’s current Roscommon or Ballaghaderreen route or your authorised household waste collector.

Electrical recycling

Free Electrical and Battery Recycling at Castlerea

Roscommon County Council confirms that household WEEE can be recycled free at its Castlerea, Boyle, Ballaghaderreen and Roscommon civic amenity sites. Household batteries can also be recycled free.

WEEE broadly covers electrical or electronic equipment that works through a plug, battery or electrical circuit. Examples include many household appliances, televisions, electronic equipment and small devices.

Household electrical equipment

Keep electrical items separate from ordinary paid recycling so they can enter the free WEEE stream.

Batteries

Do not put loose batteries into ordinary household rubbish. Use the free battery collection point at the civic amenity site.

Special collection days

Mattresses, Couches and Bulky Goods at Castlerea

Roscommon County Council runs a limited number of dedicated bulky-goods collection events rather than treating every normal civic-amenity opening day as a full bulky-waste service.

The council’s current bulky-goods service information says these events are for County Roscommon householders only. Accepted event materials include upholstered furniture, outdoor dining sets, carpets, bathroom suites, mattresses, divan beds and hard plastics.

Bulky-goods event detail Current published rule What it means
Who can use it? County Roscommon householders Commercial and retail operators are excluded.
Charge €20 per car/van and trailer This is the published special-event charge, not a general civic-amenity entry price.
Payment Cash The current bulky-goods event page specifies cash payment.
Items Selected household bulky goods Includes mattresses, couches, armchairs, carpets, bathroom suites and hard plastics when the event advertises them.

Do not bring a mattress on an ordinary day based only on a bulky-goods advert. Check the current council notice first. Event dates, site locations, hours and accepted items can change between collections.

Hazardous material

Paint, Chemicals and Hazardous Household Waste

The normal civic-amenity material list includes fee-based recycling for paint, thinner, white spirits, varnish and aerosols. However, some more difficult hazardous wastes are handled through separate council collection events.

Roscommon County Council currently says there are no additional household hazardous-waste collection events scheduled for 2026. Its event rules require household material only and original labelled containers where applicable.

Do not mix unidentified chemicals together. If you have pesticides, strong chemicals, unknown liquids, farm waste or another unusual hazardous item, contact the Environment Department before travelling.

Before you travel

Castlerea Recycling Centre Visit Checklist

1

Check that today is Monday, Friday or Saturday

Those are the normal opening days. The centre is also closed on bank holidays.

2

Avoid the 1pm lunch closure

Plan the journey for before 12:45pm or after 1:30pm rather than arriving as the site closes for lunch.

3

Remove residual black-bag rubbish

Castlerea is not the current council route for general residual household waste.

4

Separate free from paid material

Keep glass, aluminium cans, textiles, WEEE and batteries apart from chargeable paper, timber, steel cans, oils and other paid streams.

5

Check bulky goods separately

Mattresses, couches and other bulky household items may depend on a specific council collection event rather than normal opening hours.

6

Confirm current ticket prices

Because the latest council material does not publish the complete current euro ticket table, check the current cost before travelling with a large chargeable load.
